How GST Works in Australia
Australia's Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a 10% tax applied to most goods, services, and other supplies in Australia. Registered businesses collect GST on taxable sales, claim credits for GST paid on business purchases, and remit the net amount to the ATO via their Business Activity Statement (BAS).
Quick GST Formulas
- Adding GST: GST-inclusive price = price × 1.1
- GST component from inclusive price: GST = inclusive price ÷ 11
- Pre-GST price from inclusive price: Pre-GST = inclusive price × 10 ÷ 11
GST-Free and Input-Taxed Supplies
Not all goods and services attract GST. Key exemptions include:
- GST-free: Basic food, medical services, childcare, education, exports
- Input-taxed: Financial services, residential rent, precious metals
GST Registration
Businesses with annual turnover of $75,000 or more must register for GST. Once registered, you charge GST on taxable sales and can claim input tax credits on GST paid for business expenses. Report quarterly or annually via your BAS.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is 10% GST on $1,000?
10% GST on $1,000 is $100, making the GST-inclusive price $1,100. To go the other way: the GST in a $1,100 inclusive price is $1,100 ÷ 11 = $100.
Do I charge GST on labour?
Yes. If you're GST-registered, labour (services) is generally a taxable supply and you must charge and remit GST. Some specific services are GST-free (like certain medical services), but general trade labour is taxable.
Is GST charged on exports?
No. Exported goods and services are generally GST-free. However, you can still claim GST credits on inputs used to produce those exports.
When is GST remitted to the ATO?
Most small businesses report and pay GST quarterly via their BAS (Business Activity Statement). Larger businesses may report monthly. Annual lodgement is available for businesses with turnover under $10 million who meet certain criteria.
